Chapter 10

Had she done something wrong? Beth sat next to Slate on the air transport, wondering why he’d barely said a word to her since they’d awoken this morning. She peered out the window as they soared over the ever-changing American landscape below on their way to the Hostanna.

Her stomach nearly bottomed out when she recalled all the weird stuff she’d said to him last night while out on the balcony. Crap. She shouldn’t have had those two glasses of wine. She really was a lightweight when it came to drinking.

She’d basically laid her own personal existential crisis at his feet. Who am I? Why am I here? Am I boring? Her face burned at the memory of her little rant on the balcony. Why couldn’t she have kept her mouth shut?

He sat next to her, his hands on his knees, his back ramrod straight, as he peered straight ahead through the front viewscreen beyond the pilot’s seat. He appeared lost in thought, his brow furrowed and his eyes out of focus. Given his silence and his troubled expression, she was starting to worry. Was he second guessing their mating match?

Her heart sank at the prospect.

The transport started descending to the surface and a quick glance at the ground showed they’d arrived at the military base in Ohio. Her breath caught at the sight of the large, interstellar spaceship that would take them to New Vaxx. The oval-shaped craft had to be the length of twelve football fields, at least. She’d never seen a ship so large.

“Wow,” she said. “So that’s the Hostanna.”

“It is. It is a formidable vessel, built for the sole purpose of traveling to Earth. Normally when our warriors travel from place to place in the galaxy, we take our own individual transports, which we also use in combat, using the advantage of having thousands of ships to overwhelm the enemy. However, it was decided that a larger ship that could house hundreds of warriors and their human mates would be safer and use less energy resources.”

“It’s beyond impressive. I-I don’t know how I’ll manage to find my way around on board.”

He placed a hand upon her shoulder, but just as soon as he touched her, an uncomfortable expression overtook his features and he removed his hand. She swallowed hard against the sudden burning in her throat.

“Slate, I need to ask you a question, and you must promise to be honest with me.”

He nodded his agreement and she gathered the courage needed to ask the question that was troubling her.

“Are you having second thoughts?”

He tilted his head to the side, his eyes filling with confusion. “Second thoughts?”

“I mean, are you having doubts about our mating match? If you regret mating with me, I will understand. You don’t need to feel obligated to take me back to your planet as your mate.”

His nostrils flared and his eyes darkened. “You are my bride, Beth,” he said. “We exchanged mating vows and I claimed you as mine yesterday.”

“I realize that, but you seem distracted today.
